He opened a quarry, and other quarries followed. One, the Oakeley, became the world’s largest underground slate mine, with 50 miles of railroad on various levels.

Slate extraction began at Cwmorthin in 1810 via a small quarry opened by the Casson family.

The Ffestiniog Railway was built in 1836 to carry dressed slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog for export by sea. The station serves the slate mining village of Tanygrisiau and was opened in March 1866. It closed to passengers on 15 September 1939.
